Choosing the right anilox roller is essential for achieving consistent, high-quality results in flexographic printing. To provide expert insight, we spoke with Michael Torres, a flexo print engineer with over 15 years of hands-on experience. Here’s what he had to say about what truly matters when selecting an anilox roller.
Michael emphasized that performance over time is more critical than day-one results. Ceramic anilox rollers maintain cell volume and ink transfer better than chrome alternatives, especially in long runs.
“Repeatable cell geometry is key,” said Michael. He chooses rollers from manufacturers who provide certified cell volume (BCM) and line count specifications.
“An unclean roller is a useless roller,” Michael pointed out. He prefers anilox rollers compatible with ultrasonic or laser cleaning systems, ensuring easy maintenance even with heavy inks.
Anilox sleeves offer speed and ease of use for CI presses, while solid rollers are better for durability under high pressure.
“I want more than a product—I want solutions.” Michael values manufacturers who offer ongoing technical support, custom engraving, and troubleshooting services.

A: Ceramic anilox rollers are more durable and offer better cell geometry for high-quality flexo printing. Chrome rollers are less expensive but wear faster and transfer ink less precisely.
A: Use anilox sleeves in central impression (CI) presses or environments with frequent job changes. They reduce setup time and make handling easier.
A: Clean it after each print run. Use ultrasonic or laser cleaning regularly to maintain cell volume and extend roller life.
