When choosing an anilox roller for flexo printing, many buyers ask one common question:
“Should I choose a higher LPI anilox roller to get better print quality?”
The answer is: not always.
A higher LPI anilox roller can help produce finer dots, sharper images and cleaner details. However, LPI is only one part of the anilox specification. If the LPI is too high for your ink, substrate or print requirement, it may reduce ink transfer, make solid areas look weak, and even create more cleaning problems.
In flexographic printing, the best anilox roller is not simply the roller with the highest line count. It is the roller that matches your real printing application.
LPI means lines per inch. It describes how many engraved lines or cells are arranged within one inch on the surface of the anilox roller.
In general:
Higher LPI means smaller and more closely spaced cells.
Lower LPI means larger cells that can usually carry more ink.
This is why higher LPI anilox rollers are often used for fine graphics, small text, labels, flexible packaging and process printing. Lower LPI anilox rollers are more commonly used for solid printing, white ink, coating, varnish, adhesive and applications that require heavier ink transfer.
However, LPI alone does not decide the final printing result.
Two anilox rollers with the same LPI can still perform differently if their cell volume, engraving depth, cell geometry or surface condition is different.
Some customers focus mainly on line count when ordering an anilox roller.
They may ask:
“Can you make a higher LPI?”
or
“Will a higher LPI improve my printing quality?”
But in real production, LPI must be considered together with anilox volume.
Anilox volume, often measured in BCM, indicates how much ink the cells can carry and transfer. It directly affects ink film thickness, color density and print coverage.
If the LPI is high but the volume is too low, the roller may not transfer enough ink. The printed color may become weak, dry or uneven. Operators may try to adjust ink viscosity, pressure or machine settings, but the real problem may still be the wrong anilox specification.
On the other hand, if the volume is too high for a fine printing job, it may cause dot gain, dirty highlights, blurred small text, slow drying or loss of image detail.
That is why anilox roller selection should consider several factors together:
LPI
Cell volume
Cell angle
Cell shape
Ink type
Substrate
Printing plate
Printing speed
Final print requirement
The right balance of these factors determines whether the anilox roller can transfer ink consistently and accurately.
A higher LPI anilox roller is usually suitable when the job requires fine details and controlled ink transfer.
For example, higher LPI may be a good choice for:
Label printing
Fine graphics
Small text
Process color printing
Halftone images
Flexible packaging with detailed artwork
High-resolution flexo printing
These applications usually do not need a very heavy ink film. Instead, they require stable, controlled and precise ink transfer. A higher LPI roller can help reduce excessive ink transfer and support cleaner image reproduction.
However, even for fine printing, the LPI should not be selected blindly. If the volume is too low, the printed image may still look pale, dry or inconsistent.
A lower LPI anilox roller may be a better choice when the application requires more ink or coating transfer.

Applications requiring higher opacity
In these jobs, the goal is not only fine detail. The roller must deliver enough ink or coating to achieve strong coverage, good opacity or a functional coating layer.
For example, printing white ink on transparent film often requires higher ink volume. If the LPI is too high and the cells are too small, the white ink may not have enough coverage. In this case, choosing the right volume is more important than simply choosing a higher line count.
If the LPI is too high for the application, several print problems may appear.
When the cells are too small or the volume is too low, the anilox roller may not transfer enough ink. The result is lighter color, lower density or poor opacity.
Solid areas need enough ink film to look smooth and full. If the anilox roller cannot deliver enough ink, solids may look dry, grainy or uneven.
Higher LPI cells are smaller and more sensitive to dried ink, coating residue or contamination. If the roller is not cleaned properly, the effective volume decreases and print quality becomes unstable.
A higher specification does not always bring higher value. If the job does not require very fine details, an overly high LPI roller may increase operating difficulty without improving print quality.
If the LPI is too low for a fine printing job, it may also create problems, such as:
Excessive ink transfer
Dot gain
Blurred small text
Rough image edges
Slow drying
Dirty print appearance
Loss of detail in fine graphics
This is why the best choice is not the highest LPI or the lowest LPI. The best choice is the specification that fits the real printing task.
Before choosing a new anilox roller, it is important to think about the actual printing application.

Labels, flexible packaging, paper, film, cups, bags, corrugated board and other materials all behave differently during printing.
